What is Krav Maga?

Krav Maga is a defensive tactics system. It is sometimes called the Israeli Martial Art, and often referred to as the world’s most effective self defence system.

It is practical, easy to learn and requires no prior experience.

Krav Maga focusses on solutions to common assaults: grabs, chokes, holds, strikes.

Krav Maga is Hebrew for ‘Contact Combat’ and was designed by Imi Lichtenfeld in response to the rise of fascism in the 1940s, which saw marauding gangs of neo-nazis regularly attack jewish communities across Europe.

The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) was the first order given by David Ben-Gurion after the Israeli proclamation of Independence in 1948.

Imi Lichetenfeld was appointed to lead the IDF hand-to-hand combat training, and Krav Maga was born. It is a system still in place today at the IDF.

Krav Maga is now the standard for military fighting in most NATO armies and special forces units around the world.

Krav Maga Black at Urban Kombat has military roots with our Masters serving as IDF officers and sergeants, however it has been adapted for civilian populations.

The fighting system tackles common assaults such as grabs, chokes, holds, strikes, and ground fighting.

Krav Maga is simple and effective. It’s military heritage and current use means that everything in the system must be practical and effective for anyone to use to protect themselves.

Krav Maga is not a combat sport like Tae Kwon Do, Judo or Karate. It provides people with an effective toolkit for understanding the true nature of street violence – from the lead up to an altercation, the physical responses to different scenarios, and also post-event effects.

How is Krav Maga different to Martial Arts?

Krav Maga is not sport or an art. There are no katas or compliancy drills. Krav Maga is a self defence fighting system that is battle tested on Israeli streets where the harshest urbanised fighting in the world occurs on a daily basis.

Our classes involve a range of reality-based scenario drills to ensure your training matches the problems you expect to solve. Read our in-depth blog on how Krav Maga is specifically different to other Martial Arts.

What happens in regular training session?

Kids Krav classes are 45 minutes, and involve techniques, games, and fitness. Techniques are themed around responses to bullying or common child predator lures.

The overarching theme of Kids Krav classes is to have maximum fun in developing empowered children.

A Krav Maga Black training session lasts for an hour.

Each class starts with a structured 10 minute warm up that is specific to the training planned for that class. Classes cover techniques and combatives training in a range of scenarios. Specific content will vary from class to class. The areas covered include:

  • Combatives (how to deliver and block various kicks, knees, elbows, and hand striking techniques)
  • Self Defense (releases from common chokes, grabs, holds, including defending various strikes)
  • Stress drills (developing tolerance for high stress levels, to simulate the stress of a real attack)
  • Multiple attackers (dealing with multiple attackers in different scenarios)
  • Fitness and Conditioning (preparing our bodies to be physically ready to deal with violent situations)
  • Scenario training (safe and structured drills to simulate a realistic fight)
  • Contact Fighting (safe fight training with protective equipment)

We ensure that your training is planned in a way that builds on your skills and delivers training suitable to your Krav Maga progress.

How long will it take me to pick up Krav Maga?

As a defensive tactics system, Krav Maga is based on turning your natural reactions to various attacks into an effective defence. This is why Krav Maga is easy to pick up, and depending on your frequency of training, students typically report feeling more confident within a matter of months, not years.

Krav Maga is a comprehensive defensive tactics system, and the more training you do, the more you will understand the principals and techniques to deal with a stressful or violent situation.

Do women train in Krav Maga?

Yes, Krav Maga is the perfect self defence system for women in Sydney’s Inner West. In Israel, women are conscripted for 2 years into the IDF (Israeli Defence Force) at age 18. Krav Maga was developed to ensure that this fighting system would work for 18 year old women on patrol in highly volatile environments.

Krav Maga creates confidence and provides women with the necessary skills to deal with a real life threat situation. Urban Kombat encourages everyone to be their own weapon.

What do I wear?

The stiff formalities of Martial Arts are relaxed in Krav Maga. You are not required to buy an expensive set of pyjamas to show off your coloured belts.

We do find that a mental switch is flicked to increase focus and learning by wearing something uniform with your training partners. It also adds a sense of belonging and community.

Kids wear black cotton pants and a Kids Krav T Shirt.

Adults wear an Urban Kombat Krav Maga T Shirt.

This is sorted out when you join. On your trial session, you wear whatever is comfortable for doing physical activity that would involve some sweating.

Are there belts or grades in Krav Maga?

Krav Maga grades are divided by curriculum content. There is a test to pass a designated grade. This process will appeal to people who like to challenge themselves and ensure their progress is constantly evolving.

Krav Maga grades are structured as Practitioner 1-5. Graduate 1-5. Expert 1-5. These grades are designated by a military style ranking patch sown into training pants.

The acquisition of fight skills is a personal journey as much as it is physical development. Do not expect to rush through these grades.

Many Martial Arts schools use coloured belts as a retention tactic. Promises of ‘black belt in a year’ are increasingly common in schools where ‘black belts’ have not been subjected to full contact fighting. This is wrong, and very dangerous.

Krav Maga does not have a McDojo history or culture of grading people easily to simply keep them happy and paying. A designated grade is definitely earned in a reputable Krav Maga school.

Grading is encouraged to ensure progress. But successfully grading is not guaranteed by simply showing up and paying a grading fee. Your application of techniques and responses applied under pressure will be tested. If you can reliably apply a physical response under testing conditions, you will be passed.

This is to ensure that you know exactly where you are on the defensive tactics spectrum. We do not want to create a false sense of security in our students by giving them grades that betray their actual ability.

Is there any contact in the training?

There will be some light contact, (called marking) but generally not for new students. We want to  ensure that you are eased into Krav Maga and not intimidated. This also protects the safety of others since new students often don’t possess good control. Striking a balance between realism and safety is a daily point of discussion in Urban Kombat classes.

Do I need to wear safety gear?

Safety in training is a key concern of Urban Kombat.

Training in any self defence or martial arts always has a risk of injury. Students are required to have a mouth guard and groin guard as a minimum for training. These, along with other safety and training equipment, are available for order through Urban Kombat.

How often should I be training?

Students find that training a minimum of two nights a week develops good results for skills acquisition and the ability to use them under pressure. More training gets you better, quicker. The real question is ‘How good do I want to be’?

Can I pay casually per session?

No. We have a culture of community at Urban Kombat. People train together regularly and build camaraderie and support each other in their development and progress. This is not possible if random strangers came together haphazardly. It would also compromise the safety in training. Our instructors will fully commit to your development when you fully commit to membership.

What if I go away or get sick or injured, can I stop payments?

No problem. If you know you are going away for more than a month and want to freeze your payments, just email Garth with the dates you’ll be away.

Same if you’re experiencing a prolonged illness or injury that takes you out for more than a month. Just let us know via email.

That said, we expect students be responsible for their own lives. We can’t issue posthumous refunds simply because you haven’t attended classes in a while for whatever reason and didn’t say anything.

What happens if I miss a class? Do I forfeit payment or will it accrue to the next class?

No, and you will miss classes as life has a habit of disrupting the best laid plans. But that is your life.

To keep our admin cost effective, it is not viable to continually change and refund and accrue because this or that happened within the scope of your personal life.

The personal development aspects of a Krav Maga practitioner is to build resilience and sovereignty over your personal circumstances. Occasionally we get people obsessed with the concept of refunds and missed classes and accruals. We are extremely flexible within reason if we know in advance, but we won’t be customising our operations for individuals paying the standard fees.

For example if you travel or work shifts, and want to make ongoing requests such “stop payments from the 12th to 18th, and then again on the 27th to the 31st because I’m on shifts and traveling. And I forgot to tell you about the 1st to the 8th of last month when I was sick, so can I get a refund?”

If this is you, we can discuss alternative fees to accommodate the level of flexibility you require that will cover the additional administrative time and costs incurred to process these requests. For the most part, it’s a good idea to accept that you will miss classes - and we don’t offer pay-as-go to ensure we preserve a culture of trust, respect and learning among students committed to the school.
