Things to Consider When Choosing a Self Defence School

There are countless schools and gyms across Sydney teaching a plethora of martial arts and self defence classes suitable for people of different ages, and fitness and skill levels. Although choice is a good thing this also poses a problem with choosing the one that is right for you. And there are a few factors that come in to play when considering what you want to get out of the classes, how much time you can put in, and what is right for you. Who’d have thought it would be so hard choosing a self defence school?

When there are so many choices out there it can be difficult choosing a self defence school that will be right for you, but we think we have the right answer.

What You Need To Take Into Consideration

Age

Your age will be a definitive factor in what kind of self defence class you choose. Some schools and systems are quite limited and won’t offer what you yearn to learn. Many martial arts and self defence classes are not suitable for children, while some are only suitable for younger students so choosing the right school in relation to your age is crucial. Remember, nobody is too old or too young to learn self defence!

At Urban Kombat, we offer classes to suit people of any age group. We offer classes for kids which not only teach Krav Maga-influenced skills and techniques, but are also adapted to suit younger bodies and minds. Our kids Krav Maga classes are based around the following:

  • Avoidance through awareness and intuition
  • De-escalation
  • Physical defence
  • Post event issues
  • Fun games that promote technical training

Aside from Kids Krav, we offer Krav Maga Black classes that would suit anybody from their teens onwards. Krav Maga is incredibly useful for people of all ages looking to arm themselves with the skills to protect themselves in the real world.

Fitness Levels

Fitness levels may be a crucial factor in choosing the correct self defence classes for you. Many martial arts classes out there may not be suitable for those looking to get fit and learn self protection skills at the same time. Some are more technically focused with a disregard for entry level students who might not be able to master the skills needed for the classes to be truly effective.

Urban Kombat offer a comprehensive experience for those looking to both get fit and learn skills that they can master from the start. Krav Maga isn’t about being able to jump and kick or do backflips. It’s actually an unbelievably simple system for self protection that literally anybody can master, no matter how fit or strong you are.

Having said that, we understand the importance of being fit which is why each class has fitness elements that are level-appropriate to suit range of people.

Skill Levels

So many martial arts schools are completely irrelevant for what people of different skill levels are trying to achieve. The majority would be completely useless to more advanced athletes – only suitable for younger students and beginners – or vica versa. Speaking with the gym is the best way to find out whether classes will be suitable for you.

Although Krav Maga is suitable for beginners, the skills learned can be translated to even the most advanced fighters and athletes. The beauty of Krav Maga is its flexibility. Our head instructor, Garth Montgomery, has a life long background in martial arts, with training in Karate, Kung Fu, BJJ, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai. All of these martial arts can be integrated into Krav Maga training, which can be thought of as learning a self defence system rather than an art form.

Literally anybody of any skill level, fitness level or age is welcome at Urban Kombat.

Facilities

A crucial factor in choosing the right self defence school is the facilities they have to offer. More traditional gyms tend to be quite simple in their set-up, relying mostly on the knowledge of teachers. Others offer a highly commercialised equipment and flooring that provides an environment so artificial that it creates a disconnect from self defence to the real world. Of course, this is applicable for sports-based martial arts such as Tae Kwon Do, Judo, or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Urban Kombat offers a diverse environment for real world scenarios, using different terrains and conditions ensures the training is realistic for self protection purposes. Most importantly, the vibe is great.

Cost and Convenience

Cost is obviously one of the biggest factors that will help you make your final decision. We understand that making a commitment is tough and being locked into an expensive contract can completely destroy the motivation factor for learning something new.

We offer induction classes for all those who want to come in and check the place out, get a feel for what Krav Maga is all about and have a look at what we have to offer. From this session you will get:

  • Immediate skills to take away from the first class
  • Detailed instruction with other beginners
  • Brief history of Krav Maga system
  • Q&A on Krav Maga methodologies

From there onwards, Krav Maga is extremely affordable, with classes starting at $20 per week.

Obviously convenience is a contributing factor as well. We are located in the heart of Sydney’s inner west in Marrickville. There is ample parking and we are within walking distance from public transport.

If you’d like to train to be Fit, Strong and Ready, book into a Krav Maga Induction class, or call Garth on 0408 864 851.
